Sun/Planets
. It is a giant, hot ball of plasma, mostly hydrogen and helium, with a surface temperature of about
Mercury can refer to the planet closest to the Sun or the chemical element that is a shiny, silver-white metal, liquid at room temperature. The planet is the solar system’s smallest, with an airless, cratered surface that experiences extreme temperature swings, while the element is used in thermometers and fluorescent lights but can be toxic.Â
Venus is the second planet from the Sun, named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. It is Earth’s “sister planet” due to its similar size, but it is a scorching-hot world with a thick, toxic atmosphere of carbon dioxide, making it the hottest planet in our solar system. Its surface pressure is 92 times Earth’s, and its temperature can real.
Earth is the third planet from the Sun, with a diameter of about 7,917.5 miles, and is the only known planet to support life. It is a dynamic planet, formed about 4.5 billion years ago, with a surface covered by 71% water and is protected by a magnetic field. Earth’s rotation causes day and night, while its axial tilt causes the seasons
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, known as the “Red Planet” due to iron oxide in its soil. It has a rocky, desert-like surface with mountains and canyons, two small moons named Phobos and Deimos, and a thin atmosphere primarily composed of carbon dioxide. A day on Mars is slightly longer than an Earth day.
Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, the fifth planet from the sun, and a gas giant composed mostly of hydrogen and helium. It is known for its distinctive swirling bands, the Great Red Spot (a massive, long-lasting storm), and a powerful magnetic field. The planet has numerous moons and a faint ring system
Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and the second-largest planet in our solar system, famous for its prominent ring system. As a gas giant, it is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, has no solid surface, and is the least dense planet in the solar system, meaning it would float in water if a large enough body of water existed. Saturn is also the sixth planet from the sun, completing an orbit in about 29.5 Earth years, while a day on Saturn is only about 10.7 hours long.Â
Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun, a gas/ice giant known for being extremely cold and tilted on its side, which causes its poles to point towards the Sun. Its blue-green color is from methane in its atmosphere, which also has strong winds and storms. The planet is surrounded by faint rings and dozens of small moons.Â
Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the sun, an ice giant known for its dark, cold, and windy atmosphere. It is composed primarily of hydrogen, helium, and methane, with the methane giving it a distinct blue color. Neptune is characterized by extremely fast winds, up to
1,200
mph, and large storms like the Great Dark Spot.Â
Asrtroids
Asteroids are small, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun, remnants from the early formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Most are found in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but they vary greatly in size from pebbles to hundreds of miles across, and are composed of rock, metal, and other materials. Studying them, especially through meteorites that fall to Earth, provides valuable information about the solar system’s history.Â
Moon
The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite, a rocky, cratered body that orbits our planet at an average distance of 384,400 km (238,855 miles). It is about one-quarter the width of Earth and its gravity is one-sixth of Earth’s. The Moon has no light of its own but reflects sunlight, creating phases that change over its ~27-day orbit around Earth.Â
A galaxy is a massive system of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter held together by gravity, while the universe is the entirety of space, time, matter, and energy, containing billions of galaxies. The universe is the largest structure, containing galaxies, which in turn contain stars and solar systems, such as our own Milky Way galaxy, which includes our Solar System with the Sun and Earth.Â
